2006-2007

Miami-Dade County Public Schools began working with National Training Network to implement the Algebraic Thinking curriculum within 18 schools during the summer of 2006. All 12 of the superintendent’s zone schools were included in this study. Training took place prior to implementation and on site coaching visits took place on average two days per school per month as follow up support.  Students who performed below grade level based on the previous year’s FCAT scores were enrolled in Algebraic Thinking.

A comparison of seventh grade students average growth on Florida FCAT exam between state, district, to schools implementing Algebraic Thinking in 2006-2007, and the growth of developmental scale scores of seventh grade students in 2005-2006 before implementing Algebraic Thinking and in 2006-2007 after implementing Algebraic Thinking.

The seventh graders in AT schools on average outperformed the average gain for MDCPS by nearly 18 points in terms of growth over the previous year.

Developmental Scale Score Gains:
- Non AT- 7th Grade Average: 92 schools = 140.79
- AT - 7th Grade Average: 18 schools = 158

Algebraic Thinking schools outperformed the state of Florida’s growth 158 to 126 and when these 18 schools were looked at as if they were their own district, they outperformed all but five school districts in Florida (two of these districts had the same growth as AT schools, none of those 5 districts had more than 500 kids).
