San Ysidro Schools began working with National Training Network to implement the Algebraic Thinking curriculum in the summer of 2005. San Ysidro had the highest poverty rate in San Diego County, more than 95% of their students at free and reduced lunch, and was 80% non English Speaking. Teachers were trained in Algebraic Thinking prior to first year of implementation and received on-site coaching visits monthly.
The graph above illustrates the percent of change in grades 5-7 between 2005 and 2008. Most notable is the significant increase in students scoring in the advanced category with positive change in the proficient category. Likewise students scoring in the below basic and far below basic categories decreased significantly.
